There are some things I can never do without: a crisp white shirt, a great fragrance, and a white linen napkin. Whether at Restaurant JAN, Klein JAN or JAN Franschhoek, nothing brings a touch of refinement to a table quite like a freshly-pressed, monogrammed napkin. I used to collect them – visiting countless brocante markets across the city of Nice in search of vintage napkins, each embroidered with the ornate initials of someone I can only assume was very important – but in recent years, I have started to have my own made. The JH monogram embroidered on my white linen napkin celebrates each of my restaurants and links their individual stories.
